After studying in London in the late 1930’s, Preston later studied under John Knight and Klytie Pate at the Melbourne Technical College (later RMIT). In 1958, with his wife Phyl Dunn, Arthur Halpern, Gus Mclaren and Charles Wilton, Preston set up the Potters Cottage in Warrandyte, east of Melbourne. In 1985 Preston and Dunn moved to Woolamai on Western Port Bay.
